A lifetime of being locked in a well, receiving leftovers from strangers, sounds like a post-war dramatic plot.

But this time, it reflects the reality that April experienced, a nine-year-old bear living in a concrete pit next to a restaurant in Armenia.

There, she received leftovers from the sole food establishment and had to settle down to admire the landscape through the net separating her from the outside.

Fortunately for last April/October, a committee from International Animal Rescue (IAR) and the Conservation of Wildlife and Cultural Property  launched a project called the Prize. Rescue the Big Bear , aims to rescue all bears in captivity in Armenian.

In this republic, bears are often displayed as a hobby or entertainment next to restaurants, while others are displayed at bus stops, tourist attractions or private establishments. Recently, the discovery of a starving bear locked up in a dark barn was even reported.

A few days ago, rescue officials went to the restaurant to cooperate with Armenian emergency services, who were on the scene and had cut through the thick bars of the metal grill on the side of the room. April’s detention, which apparently didn’t happen. has been open for a long time.

The stress that this whole situation creates in the suffering animal is obvious and so it exhibits obvious restless behavior, moving from corner to corner inside the concrete cage.

Faced with this situation, a veterinarian helped calm April down by applying an intravenous sedative, which also allowed the team to guarantee the safety conditions to remove her from the well on a stretcher and later transfer her to a clinic for medical evaluation.

April is the 12th bear the team has rescued this year. The calculations made by the specialists determine that 60 bears are still captive throughout Armenia , and the group set itself the goal of continuing to work until the full freedom of all the bears is achieved.

April is currently receiving medical treatment, based on a diet rich in protein and nutrients that will help her gain strength after so many years of abandonment and neglect.

However, the most important thing is that she is being treated with dignity and consideration, perhaps she has never been treated like this in her life.
