Experience the Unmatched Power and Timeless Appeal of the 300HP '57 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket 88!

If you think a fuel injected Chevy Bel Air was the top of the General Motors luxury/performance food chain in 1957, allow me to introduce you to this 1957 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket 88 with the J2 371 cubic inch engine. For 1957, the basic 88 was officially named Golden Rocket 88, taken from Olds’ 1956 Motorama two-passenger show car. However, the only badging identifying it as such was a simple “88” underneath each taillight. 1957 also offered the “J2” option, with three 2-barrel carburetors atop the 371 cubic inch V8; making this a true luxury performance car before we even knew such a thing existed.

Don’t be fooled by the large-by-huge chrome wheels its wearing today, this particular ’57 Golden Rocket 88 is an authentic J2 car, and is extensively and thoroughly restored to original condition from top to bottom (and yes, original wheels and tires are included). Sources differ on how many were built and into which bodies they were installed, but they all agree that these are extremely rare cars.

Our documents suggest that this is one of only four Golden Rocket 88 2-door sedans in existence with the J2 engine. The market hasn’t caught on yet, however, that these are faster and more luxurious than their Chevy cousins, and arguably just as attractive, making this one a tremendous bargain. Style, performance and luxury, this Golden Rocket 88 represents first-class ‘50s cruising today at a price that probably doesn’t even cover the paint and chrome restoration.

The two-tone bodywork on this car is spectacularly done and looks especially striking in black and white with a red stripe in the chrome trim that separates the two halves. And to answer your first question, yes, that’s the original color combination photos are included showing this car in original, pre-resotration condition, and everything is the same, right down to the red stripe.

Bodywork is beautiful, with straight panels and excellent fit throughout, evidenced by the miles-deep reflections in the paint. 2-stage urethane was used to give it an incredibly durable finish that will last decades if you treat it right, and with classic colors like black and white, it doesn’t look too flashy or modern the way other colors and metallics always do. Overall, the design is clean, uncluttered and streamlined, and in my opinion, one of the most successful body shapes to come out of the over-wrought 1950s.

The real story on this Olds is the J2 engine under the hood. In 1957, Chevy increased the size of the venerable small block V8 from 265 to 283 cubic inches, but the Olds still packed nearly 90 more cubic inches. With its J-2 triple-carb induction system, the Olds 371 was rated at an even 300 horsepower and 400 pounds of torque, 17 horses more than the much-celebrated-yet-finicky 1-horsepower-per-cubic-inch fuel injected 283.

And when they talk about “Golden Rocket” they are probably talking about the engine and its brilliant gold paint. Gold was an Oldsmobile engine color for many years, and in this engine bay, it really pops. Fully rebuilt during the restoration, it runs like new and the passing of years has proven that these are some extremely durable engines.

The black and white and red theme continues inside, and looking at the interior in this Olds only reminds me that General Motors was at the very top of their game in the late 1950s. From the tri-tone seats with patented GM comfort weave cushions, to the positively breathtaking instrument cluster, this interior is so artfully designed that you’ll find yourself sitting behind the wheel just admiring it as I did.//Source: Youtube/RK Motors // www.rkmotors.com

Restored 1964 Maserati Mistral Spyder 3500 Seeks Deserving Owner in Exquisite Revival

Not to be confused with the Bugatti W16 Mistral, the Maserati Mistral is a two-seat gran turismo produced by the Casa del Tridente between 1963 and 1970. Approximately 950 units were produced in this period, which makes the Pietro Frua-styled a blue-chip collectible in this day and age.

The Mistral holds a significant place for the Modena-based automaker because it marks the company’s final application of the twin-spark DOHC inline-six engine that also saw on-track action.

The Mistral we’re covering today, chassis number AM109S027, is equipped with the 3.5-liter variant of the said engine, derived from the 3.5-liter unit of the 350S racing car.

Presently located in Florida, the Mistral Spyder in the clip below is one of approximately 125 units produced. Fewer than 30 examples of the breed came with the aforementioned powerplant.

Engine number 2308 matches the number listed on the factory technical data sheet, making this particular Mistral Spyder 3500 extremely desirable. The question is, how did this grand tourer end up in Florida in such great condition?

#027 was originally delivered to New York-based Auto Distributors in October 1964 with an alloy hardtop. Purchased by the current owner from a museum in 2012, the car went through a no-expense-spare refurbishment in 2013 that included a repaint in metallic blue.

The interior was reupholstered in red leather. Popping the hood reveals a trio of Weber carburetors in lieu of the bone stock Lucas-supplied indirect fuel injection.

Pictured on Borrani wire wheels complemented by three-eared knock-offs, the open-top cruiser is rolling on Blockley-tubed Pirelli Cinturato rubber boots. Girling disc brakes with twin-servo assistance also need to be mentioned, along with a Secura wood-rimmed steering wheel, Jaeger instrumentation, a ZF-supplied manual box, and a leaf-sprung rear axle.

Offered with the Maserati Classiche Certificate of Origin, the fabulous-looking Mistral Spyder 3500 is currently going for $82,222 after four bids on Bring a Trailer. The auction will end Thursday, December 1st.

Immaculate 1970 Ford Boss 302 Mustang Fastback Set to Dominate the Auction Scene

The Ford Motor Company realized after the 1970 model year that its flagship Mustang had just gone through its fourth consecutive year of declining sales.

It could have been a result of increased competition from the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge, or it could have been from the design tinkering Ford began with its coupe and fastback dating back to 1967.

In fact, many Mustang enthusiasts did not care for the evolution of the fastback body design from 1966, 1967, and 1968.

Whatever the reason, Ford did know that it had a bright spot in its Mustang lineup in the form of the formidable Boss 302 Fastback variant. From its introduction in the previous year, the Boss 302 Fastback sales increased from just 1,628 to over 7,000 in 1970. Ironically, the Boss 302 was devised by a former Chevrolet engineer.

One of those 1970 Boss 302 Fastback Mustang will roll up on the auction stage at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida, on Sunday, January 8, 2023. This is not a vehicle that has been toyed with in any mechanical way as it is in its original form, with the exception of the replacement BF Goodrich tires.

The Medium Lime Metallic paint with the distinctive black Boss stripe running over the hood just below the windshield, down the fender in the back of the front wheels, and back to the rear bumper appears in showroom condition (Ford dubbed stripe the 'hockey stick' stripes). The black vinyl interior also shows to be in great shape.

The Boss 302 was a distinctive engine with its threaded freeze plugs and ability to turn 290 hp (294 ps/216 kW)) and came mated to a close-ration manual 4-speed transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok rear axle.

Power steering, power front disc brakes, front and rear spoilers, and chrome Magnum 500 wheels were all standard issue on the Boss 302.

Mileage was not stated on the docket, but this is one Mustang that deserves a spot in the garage of any Pony Car fanatic.

For value context, according to Hagerty, a clean 1970 Boss 302 Mustang Fastback is worth up to $70,000, while one in top condition could go for as much as $135,000.

Beneath Its Citron Yella Hood Lies the Legendary 426 Hemi V8: A Look at the 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee

The Dodge Super Bee muscle car has a remarkably interesting history, moving between Chrysler lines in a noticeably short timeframe, then also getting resurrected for a modern appearance during the late 2000s.

The original mid-size Dodge Super Bee muscle cars were only built for the 1968 through 1971 model years. Initially, this was a version of the Coronet two-door coupe and got twinned with the Plymouth Road Runner.

For 1971 alone, the nameplate was actually based on the Charger platform, and during the entire 1970s, there was also a Mexican Valian Super Bee.

Now, there is no point in reminding everyone how the modern reincarnations were just mostly vintage-like attire on the Charger sedan, right? Better stick to the classics, as this 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee residing proudly in the inventory of Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Garage Kept Motors is by far a lot more interesting.

It arrives with just 67,856 miles (109,204 km) on the odometer in a spectacular Citron Yella manner, complete with a black vinyl top, a frame-off complete restoration, and a black plus maroon faux wood veneer interior.

Other major highlights include the automatic transmission and – above all – the switch from the original V8 engine’s displacement of 383ci to the legendary 426ci big block Hemi V8 mill!

The Mopar High Impact color, the trim, the cockpit, all paint a classic picture of muscle car outrageousness. And even the Sun Super X tachometer is period-correct, along with the 727 TorqueFlite three-speed auto, 9.75 Dana 60 series rear differential, plus the 14-inch factory-stamped steel wheels with stainless trim and white-letter radial tires.

No one needs to know more than that, right? Well, there is also a little detail about the asking price. And even though the dealership admits this to be an older restoration, they are still dropping a massive $114,900 quotation on their online portal…

Rare 1970 Shelby GT500 with Unique Specifications to Amaze Bidders at Upcoming Auction

Every Shelby Mustang from every era is a very special car indeed. But some, usually those from early generations, are more special than others. Mecum's 2023 Kissimmee, Florida's Classic Car Auction, is shaping up to be one of the hottest of the 2020s so far. All on the backs of must-see vehicles like this very, very special Mustang.

It's a GT500 Fastback 428 from 1970. Though it lacks the iconic front fascia of earlier Shelby Mustangs, you'll come to find this example has qualities that make this easy to overlook.

For one thing, that 335-horsepower 428-cubic inch (7.0-liter) wasn't under the hood of every Mustang. Only 380 of them were built purposefully for the GT500's production run for the 1970 model year.

But besides that, this Shelby sports trinkets like ultra-rare Wimbledon White paint with dark red knitted-vinyl interior combined with goodies like power front disk brakes, a 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle, and Goodyear Polyglass 15-inch tires.

According to the Elite Marti report for this vehicle, it's the only 1970 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 to leave the factory with this specific set of options.

That's right, folks, this machine is one of one on the entire planet. Do you understand now why this is the kind of car we go gaga over? With the up close and personal photos that come along with this car's advertisement, we see how the unique color combination actually makes for something extremely desirable looking.

It's pretty subjective whether the wood-accented interior trim pieces are tacky or not, but they are at least period correct.

A well-sorted early-model Shelby Mustang is a timeless collector's item practically worth its weight in precious metals regardless of the specifics of it the options the original owner checked off on a selection sheet.

But every so often, the specifics of what's marked on that piece of paper can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars if you play your cards right. That's why we can't wait to see what this beauty will sell for.
